New SNAP rules on eligible foods
If enacted, you could use SNAP only for foods the Secretary of Agriculture puts on an approved list within 180 days. Alcohol and tobacco would stay banned; soft drinks, candy, ice cream, and prepared desserts like cakes, pies, and cookies would be off-limits unless added by rule. The rules would focus on nutrition and appropriate fat, sugar, and salt. Prepared meals bought with SNAP would need to meet the new standards starting on enactment. The list would be reviewed at least every 5 years, and states could request culturally appropriate swaps that are nutritionally equal and approved.
