VA fitness pilot for veterans
If enacted, the bill would create a three-year VA pilot to give eligible veterans access to SilverSneakers or a similar evidence-based senior exercise program. The program would be offered as part of VA health care. Veterans would need to be enrolled in the VA patient enrollment system under 38 U.S.C. §1705 and meet participation criteria the VA Secretary would set by regulation. The Secretary would be able to run the pilot nationally or regionally. The authority to carry out the pilot would end three years after the pilot starts. Not later than 180 days after the pilot ends, the Secretary would have to report to the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees on participation rates, program costs, effects on participants' health outcomes (including physical fitness and chronic disease management), and recommendations on whether to make the pilot permanent.
