S1893119th Congress

Henrietta Lacks Congressional Gold Medal Act

Sponsored By: Senator Van Hollen, Chris [D-MD]

Introduced

Summary

Recognize Henrietta Lacks with a Congressional Gold Medal to honor the HeLa cell line and its contributions to medicine, scientific progress, quality of life, and patient rights. The bill would authorize the Secretary of the Treasury to design and strike a gold medal, designate the medals as national medals and numismatic items, and transfer the gold medal to the Smithsonian for display and research with a congressional preference for other Lacks-related sites. It would also allow the U.S. Mint to strike and sell bronze duplicates priced to recover costs and to use the Mint Public Enterprise Fund to cover and receive those amounts.
