Apprenticeship help for secondary students
If enacted, the bill would create a federal program to expand apprenticeships for secondary school students. The Labor Department would award competitive contracts to industry intermediaries. The program would prioritize high-poverty, rural, disconnected youth, Indian children, women in trades, and people with disabilities. Contract funds could pay for training, tools, tutoring, internet access, wraparound supports, and other costs. Contracts could also cover up to 50% of an apprentice's wages while they are in the apprenticeship. The Secretary would define eligibility, list high-need jobs (building trades, health care, teaching, technology, manufacturing), and set award rules. Funding is authorized as "such sums as may be necessary."
