Medicare coverage for early Alzheimer's tests
If enacted, Medicare recipients would be able to get Medicare coverage for certain early-detection Alzheimer's and related-dementia screening tests received on or after January 1, 2028. Qualifying tests would need FDA clearance under section 510(k), classification under section 513(f)(2), or approval under section 515 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Tests would include a genomic sequencing blood or blood product test, or other equivalent tests (for example, single-analyte tests; cell-free nucleic acid blood analysis; multiplex panels; whole genome, whole exome, or whole transcriptome sequencing; protein expression; and related imaging based on biospecimens) when the Secretary finds them comparable. Tests that meet these conditions and are furnished on or after January 1, 2028 would be included in Medicare payment determinations and paid under Medicare.
