Sponsored By: Senator Blumenthal, Richard [D-CT]

Passed Senate

Summary

Honoring World War II veterans and marking the 80th anniversary of the war's end, this resolution thanks the Greatest Generation and calls Americans to commemorate the Sept. 2, 1945 surrender aboard the USS Missouri. It recalls that after the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States entered World War II and that about 16.3 million Americans served. Around 415,000 U.S. service members were killed, roughly 670,000 were seriously wounded, and about 130,000 were held as prisoners of war. The resolution mourns the more than 200,000 who died in the Battle of Okinawa from April 1 to June 22, 1945, including over 12,000 U.S. service members and as many as 150,000 Japanese civilians. It also reaffirms the 1951 Treaty of Peace with Japan and recognizes postwar alliances and U.S. defense sites across the Indo-Pacific.
