Counties can update old school tax exemptions

The law lets counties change school property tax exemption amounts after a county-wide reassessment. It applies only to exemptions created, clarified, or expanded by county rules adopted on or before January 1, 1998. A county can pass a new ordinance to set the updated amounts. Your school tax bill could go up or down based on the county’s decision. The goal is to protect seniors and people with disabilities from sharp increases after reassessment.
