4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
High schools must teach financial literacy
All districts and charter schools that serve high school students must offer at least a 1/2 credit Financial Literacy course. The course uses a state-aligned curriculum with assessments. Districts and charters provide training opportunities for teachers. The Department of Education adds financial literacy to Social Studies standards, with State Board approval.
School partners can fund scholarships, speakers
Districts and charter schools are encouraged to partner with public or private groups to enrich the course. Partners can provide guest speakers, student competitions, scholarships, and teacher training. These partnerships are voluntary.
Teacher certification for finance course
The Department of Education and the Professional Standards Board set the certification needed to teach the Financial Literacy credit. Teachers must hold the required certification to award the credit.
Financial literacy now required to graduate
Beginning with students entering 9th grade in the 2026–2027 school year, students must pass a 1/2 credit Financial Literacy course to receive a Delaware high school diploma. The credit counts as part of the Social Studies requirement.
