New Castle County split school tax rates

For the 2025–2026 school tax year, a district located entirely in New Castle County may use two local school tax rates: one for homes and one for other property. The non-residential rate must be at least the residential rate and no more than twice it. The total money the district projects from both rates cannot be higher than its original 2025–2026 tax warrant. A district that uses this option must report the new rates and deliver a new warrant to the County within 10 business days after the law takes effect.

New Castle County updates bills; Oct 30 deadline

After New Castle County gets a new warrant, it updates any 2025–2026 tax bills using the new school rates. If your bill is updated, your payment deadline is October 30, 2025. If you already paid and the new bill is lower, the County credits the extra to future school taxes. You can send a written request to get a refund instead of a credit.

Short-term state loans for districts

A district that resets its rates can borrow from State Division I funds if the extended deadline creates a cash-flow shortfall for the 2026 fiscal year. This helps the district keep school services running while it waits for tax payments.
