Delaware 250 plate available to owners

Delaware creates a Delaware 250 license plate to mark America’s 250th and Separation Day. The DMV issues the plate only after it gets at least 200 applications. It is for private passenger vehicles and motor vehicles or trailers with a manufacturer GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less, owned by a person or a business. Vehicles that qualify for the International Registration Plan cannot get this plate. Your new plate keeps the same letters and numbers you already have. Delaware 250 submits the design for DMV approval; plates can say “Delaware 250,” cannot be only black and white, and the DMV can reject designs that harm public-safety enforcement. The DMV can set rules to run the program.

One-time $50 fee for Delaware 250 plate

You pay a one-time $50 application fee to get the Delaware 250 plate. This $50 includes a $15 administrative charge and is on top of your normal annual registration fee. Members of nonprofits who are usually exempt from registration fees still must pay this $50 application fee. If you need a replacement plate, the DMV charges a fee it sets to cover the plate’s cost.

Where Delaware 250 plate fees go

From the $50 fee, $15 goes into a DMV special fund to promote and run the plate program. Any money left in that fund after costs goes to the Delaware 250 Fund. The rest of the fee ($35 per application, after DMV-deducted costs) is set aside with the State Treasurer in the Delaware 250 Fund. Delaware 250 decides how to spend that fund to support the 250th anniversary events.
