Medicaid covers medically needed skin removal

Starting January 1, 2027, Delaware Medicaid plans under Title 31 § 503(3) cover medically necessary removal of excess skin and subcutaneous tissue, including panniculectomy. “Medically necessary” is defined in state law.

Private health plans must cover excess skin surgery

Starting January 1, 2027, most private health plans in Delaware must cover medically necessary removal of excess skin and subcutaneous tissue, including panniculectomy. “Medically necessary” is defined in state law. Usual plan rules can still apply, like deductibles, coinsurance, provider networks, allowable charge limits, and coordination of benefits. This does not apply to accident-only, specified disease, hospital indemnity, Medicare supplement, long-term care, disability income, or other limited-benefit policies. Policies issued, renewed, or changed after December 31, 2026 must follow these rules.

State employee plan covers excess skin surgery

Starting January 1, 2027, the Delaware State employee health plan covers medically necessary removal of excess skin and subcutaneous tissue, including panniculectomy. “Medically necessary” is defined in state law.
