Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Emergency plans and AEDs at school sports

Schools with athletic programs must have a written emergency plan for each sports venue. Plans must follow national recommendations, be posted and shared, and be practiced each year. Each venue must have a clearly marked, unlocked defibrillator (AED). It must be reachable during school hours, games, and practices. Schools must test and maintain AEDs as the maker says. They must also tell the Office of EMS the AED type and location. This improves on-site response for student athletes.

State rules on cardiac safety in sports

The State Board of Education sets rules on spotting and handling sudden cardiac arrest in school sports. Member schools must follow these rules for student-athlete awareness, recognition, and care. This creates common training and response steps across schools.

CPR and AED training for coaches

The law requires every school-appointed head coach to keep current CPR certification that includes AED use. All middle and high school coaches must earn and keep CPR, first aid, and AED certification. CPR and AED training must follow national evidence-based guidelines. Coaches may need time and classes to keep these up. If your child plays school sports, their coaches have this training.
