New limits and rules for apprentices

Beginning July 1, 2026, an apprentice electrician license can last at most five years. If your license was issued five or more years before July 1, 2026, you cannot renew past its current end date unless the Board grants a one‑year extension for good cause. You must ask at least 60 days before it expires. If your license was issued less than five years before July 1, 2026, it now ends five years from its issue date. Licenses issued on or after July 1, 2026 expire five years after issue. Apprentices and student apprentices must work under direct onsite supervision by a master, master special, limited, limited special, residential, or journeyperson electrician. The supervising licensed electrician is responsible for the apprentice’s work. School apprentice licenses do not need renewal and stay valid while you are enrolled in a Board‑approved vocational high school program or until you turn 18, whichever is later.

Stricter license renewals and insurance

Beginning July 1, 2026, most electrician licenses must be renewed every two years. To renew you must pay the fee, file the Division form, show general liability insurance, and complete the Board’s continuing education. You may ask in writing to place your license on inactive status (school apprentices are excluded). While inactive, your renewal fee is prorated. To return to active work, you must notify the Board in writing and finish the required continuing education. The State Board of Electrical Examiners also reviews applicant credentials for all license types to decide if you meet the licensing qualifications.
