Tougher penalties for sexual extortion

The law defines sexual extortion as forcing someone into a sexual act or sexual image by threats. Threats can include physical harm, property damage, criminal charges, exposing secrets, or sharing sexual images. Sexual extortion is a Class E felony. It becomes a Class B felony if an adult targets a child or a vulnerable adult, or if the victim suffers serious injury or death.

School lessons and training on body safety

Students in pre-K through 12 get age-appropriate lessons on body safety, sexual abuse, and sexual extortion. Schools must give parents easy-to-find info on warning signs, how to talk with kids, how to report, and counseling resources. All school employees get training on state and federal laws and penalties, including sexual extortion. At least one administrator, nurse, or counselor gets extra training on working with police and Title IX coordinators. State child protection agencies, with the Department of Education, maintain these programs for every district and charter school and review them at least every three years.
