Officers can sue for $10,000+

If your personal information is published in violation of this law after you asked for privacy, you can sue. A court can award at least $10,000 and up to three times your actual damages, plus costs and reasonable lawyers' fees. Posting after a request can also lead to criminal charges. The law takes effect 180 days after enactment. This law does not change federal Section 230 protections for online services.

Agencies and sites must remove officers' data

After you submit a written request, government agencies and private sites must take down your and your family's personal information. They must remove it from public view within 72 hours. Printed directories must drop it at the next update, and subsidiaries cannot show it. They also cannot share or sell your data. Covered data include your home address, phone numbers, personal email, Social Security and tax ID numbers, bank and card numbers, birth or marital records, property tax records, and the identities of children under 18.

How officers request privacy protection

You must submit a signed written request before these protections apply. Your request must list which personal details to keep private, may name a secondary home, and list family members whose details would reveal you. A representative can file for you with your written consent. If you file with the Department, it enrolls you with an online privacy vendor and sends quarterly lists to agencies; that list counts as a request to each agency. Your request lasts two years and can be renewed while employed or revoked at any time. If you are removed for cause or fired, protection ends right away. If you retire or leave in good standing, you can get a two‑year extension. These rules cover officers who served on or after the law’s effective date.
