Higher pension deductions for judicial officers

Beginning January 26, 2025, new members of the Judicial Pension Plan pay 5% of pay above $6,000 up to the Social Security wage base, and 5% above that, for their first 24 years. If you first qualify on January 26, 2025 as a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner, or Magistrate and join the plan, you keep paying the same rate you paid under the State Employees’ plan for your first 24 years. If you first joined under the transitional paragraph and later take a different judicial post, you then pay 5% above $6,000 up to the wage base and 5% above it for the rest of the 24 years. These changes take effect January 26, 2025.

Five-year payout of saved leave

If you first qualify on January 26, 2025 and choose the Judicial Pension Plan, your accrued annual leave is paid in five yearly installments. The first installment is completed by January 1, 2026. If you leave state service before all installments are paid, the unpaid balance is paid when you leave.

Some court officers may keep old plan

If you are a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner, or Magistrate who first qualifies on January 26, 2025, you may decline the Judicial Pension Plan and stay in the State Employees’ Pension Plan. You must send your written choice by a date and in a way the Pension Administrator sets.
