New rules for rehired state pensioners

Your Delaware state pension keeps paying only if you follow rehire rules for certain state jobs. Otherwise, payments stop for any month you work. Covered jobs include elected or Governor-appointed roles, temporary or substitute work (including substitute teachers), temporary justices of the peace, and per diem General Assembly staff. For appointed, temporary/casual/seasonal/substitute, or substitute teacher roles, if you are under 59½ and under 65, you must have a bona fide 3-month break after retirement before starting. In 2023 and 2024, you can earn up to $50,000 from temporary or substitute teaching without cutting your pension. Above $50,000, your pension is cut $1 for every $2, starting each July after the year earned, as applied by the Board.
