Parkinson’s registry patients gain privacy protections

The law keeps patient-identifying information in Florida’s Parkinson’s disease registry confidential and shields it from public records requests. The Parkinson’s Disease Research Board may receive this information. A private entity contracted by the board to establish and maintain the registry may also receive it. The entity must submit a research plan detailing the exact information requested and its intended use. It must agree to keep identifying information confidential, destroy confidential records after research ends, and never contact patients directly or indirectly. The act takes effect on the same date as HB 1443 or similar legislation that becomes law after adoption in the same session or an extension. The exemption ends October 2, 2031, unless lawmakers review and reenact it.
