Free swimming lessons for more children
Beginning July 1, 2026, Florida expands no-cost swimming lesson vouchers to children ages 1 through 7. Previously, children had to be age 4 or younger. Family income must be no more than 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Families must live in Florida and provide their Florida address. The Department of Health must set up an application process and check eligibility for one or more vouchers.
New water safety education for parents
Beginning July 1, 2026, Florida’s Department of Health must create drowning prevention and safe bathing materials. Hospitals, birth centers, and home birth providers must give them to newborns’ parents or caregivers during postpartum education and care. Childbirth educators must also give them to parents or caregivers receiving childbirth education. Materials must explain infant and toddler drowning risks in bathtubs, pools, and other water sources, including drowning data. They must cover constant supervision, early swimming lessons, water safety skills, home hazards, and research-backed safe bathing practices. Birthing hospitals must include these materials and the department’s eye and vision pamphlet in postpartum education. The law removes the hospital requirement to include safe sleep information and causes of sudden unexpected infant death.
