Privacy for code inspector body-cam videos

Body-cam videos by code inspectors are confidential when filmed inside a home, inside a health or social service facility, or in other private places. The law defines what counts as a body camera, who is a code inspector, and who can act as a personal representative. Local governments may still share recordings only for official duties, including with other agencies. The rule also covers older recordings made before this law. Other public-records exemptions still apply to protected parts of a video. This exemption lasts until October 2, 2031, unless renewed by the Legislature.

How to get code inspector video

You can get the parts of a code inspector’s body-cam video that show you. Your personal representative can get those same parts. If you lived or stayed in a place shown, you can get the interior parts that show that place, even if you are not in the video. A judge can also order release and must weigh privacy, safety, need for evidence, and whether redaction can protect people; the local government gets notice. Local governments must keep these recordings for at least 90 days. These access rules last until October 2, 2031.
