Florida prescribers must take opioid course

Beginning July 1, 2026, Florida prescribers with DEA registration must complete a board-approved 2-hour course on prescribing controlled substances at each biennial license renewal. The course is offered by a statewide physician association and carries AMA PRA Category 1 or American Osteopathic Category 1-A credit. It covers opioid prescribing standards, non-drug and other options, emergency opioid antagonists, addiction risks at all stages, and treating pain for patients with sickle cell disease. The course can be taken online and counts toward your required CE hours. The Department of Health does not renew a license if this course is not done. You are exempt if your practice act already requires at least 2 hours on safe and effective prescribing.
