Guam sets official holidays and Chamoru Day

The law sets a fixed list of Guam legal holidays that government offices and courts observe. It names: New Year’s Day (Jan 1); Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (third Monday in January); Guam History and Chamoru Heritage Day (first Monday in March); and Memorial Day (last Monday in May). It also names Independence Day (July 4); Liberation Day (July 21); Labor Day (first Monday in September); All Souls’ Day (Nov 2); Veterans Day (Nov 11); Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November); Our Lady of Camarin Day (Dec 8); and Christmas (Dec 25). March is Mes CHamoru, and the first Monday in March is a legal holiday to honor Guam history and Chamoru heritage. Each year the Governor issues a proclamation and names a committee or civic groups to plan events; any net proceeds go to public causes, and the government may provide a site but not take part otherwise.
