Online driver courses reach eligible students

Beginning July 1, 2025, approved online driver-training programs must offer courses to all students eligible for Idaho driver training. This includes the Idaho Digital Learning Alliance and other state-approved online programs. The State Department of Education must post an approved-program list on its website and provide it at every county driver’s license office.

Parent-led driver training for eligible families

Beginning July 1, 2025, eligible Idaho students can take on-road driver training with a qualified parent or guardian. Both must live in a rural school district or a district without driver training. The parent needs a valid Idaho license allowing unaccompanied driving and no suspension, revocation, cancellation, or license disqualification during the previous two years. Students must complete 30 hours of approved online classroom instruction, with six hours each of observation and behind-the-wheel training alongside it. Parents must teach Idaho’s approved curriculum and log each session’s date, time, location, and skills practiced. The law removes the former separate 92-hour parental on-road training requirement. The enrollment fee is $10 for this option, compared with the standard $15. After training, the licensed instructor submits the student log to the county license office and gives the permit to the parent.
