Idaho seeks new SNAP grocery limits

Beginning July 1, 2025, Idaho’s health and welfare director must seek federal approval to bar SNAP purchases of candy and soda. The purchase ban applies only after the U.S. Department of Agriculture grants approval. Until approval is granted, the director must request it each year. Candy means sweetened bars, drops, or pieces made with chocolate, fruit, nuts, or other ingredients or flavorings. Items containing flour or needing refrigeration are excluded. Soda means nonalcoholic drinks with natural or artificial sweeteners. Drinks containing milk or milk substitutes, or more than 50% fruit or vegetable juice by volume, are excluded. Drinks needing preparation before use, such as powders or concentrates, are also excluded.
