Beginning July 1, 2025, qualifying Idaho farm buildings are exempt from the chapter’s building codes and board rules. Covered buildings include livestock shelters, barns, stables, grain silos, farm sheds, greenhouses, and structures for storing farm products or implements. Equipment storage and maintenance buildings qualify when the equipment is used only in farming. Homes, workplaces that process, treat, or package farm products, and places used by the public are excluded. Counties cannot narrow the exemption through size limits, exit-distance rules, sprinkler requirements, or other changes. Counties can require permits only to check road setbacks and utility easements, with fees capped at actual permit-issuing costs.
