More integrative care coverage through Medicare Advantage

Beginning January 1, 2027, Louisiana Medicare Advantage plans must cover qualifying integrative care to the extent federal law allows. This is evidence-based care used alongside standard medical treatment. Nationally recognized clinical guidelines must endorse the care and recommend it to diagnose, treat, or manage a covered condition. Examples include acupuncture, cryotherapy, and reusable scalp cooling systems that serve a medical purpose. Plans may still apply their deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and prior authorization rules. Other care-management rules must follow federal law and plan terms without conflicting with the coverage requirement. The law applies to new policies, contracts, and health plans issued on or after January 1, 2027. Existing coverage must comply by its renewal date, no later than January 1, 2028. Louisiana’s insurance commissioner must submit required federal materials, issue needed rules, and take other implementation steps allowed by federal law.
