Louisiana health plans, including state health plans, must cover medically needed treatment for conditions linked to the SCN2A gene. Covered care includes seizure medicines and other drugs; physical, occupational, speech, and behavioral therapies; medical equipment and assistive devices; and nutrition, feeding, and digestive care. The treating doctor or advanced practice provider determines medical need, including for additional treatments. Plans delivered, issued for delivery, renewed, or contracted for beginning January 1, 2027 must also cover genetic testing to diagnose these conditions. Testing requires an order from a treating doctor or advanced practice provider and the plan's finding that it is medically needed. Limited-benefit policies are excluded, and covered benefits count as rehabilitation or skill-building services and devices under essential health benefit rules. Plans cannot deny covered care because of disability, developmental status, or a preexisting condition. Prior approval rules must be fair and no stricter than for other benefits; copays, deductibles, and coinsurance cannot exceed those for other medical or surgical benefits. Denials based on medical need must explain the reasons and unmet standards in writing, and patients can appeal.
