Survivor benefits reach reserve officers' families

Louisiana extends survivor payments to surviving spouses and children of officers serving as reserve or auxiliary officers when they died. Death must occur while traveling to or from a public safety emergency, or responding to requests for police assistance concerning public health, safety, or welfare. Travel between home and the officer's authorized work area also qualifies when using an agency-provided law enforcement vehicle. These rules also cover commissioned officers certified by Louisiana's Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training. These payments are in addition to benefits under another part of the program; this law does not state individual payment amounts.
