More safeguards for people in civil lawsuits

In Louisiana civil cases, requests for admission ask another party to accept specific facts as true. The law removes automatic admission for failing to answer within 30 days or another court-set period. Except for default judgments, courts must wait until a Rule 10.1 conference occurs and its certificate is issued before deeming requests admitted. Each requested admission must be stated separately. Responses still require a signed written answer or objection immediately after restating each request, with reasons for any objection. Answers must fairly address the request; parties may admit part, qualify a denial, or explain why they cannot truthfully answer. Lack of information requires reasonable inquiry, and a trial dispute alone is not grounds for an objection.
