New payment deadlines for Louisiana teacher pensions

Beginning July 1, 2026, Louisiana’s teachers’ retirement system must follow federal minimum-payment rules using a good-faith interpretation. Member payments must start by the later of two deadlines: April 1 after the retirement year, or the federally defined required beginning date. Named beneficiaries receiving lifetime or life-expectancy payments generally must start by December 31 of the year after the member dies. For surviving spouses, the law also allows December 31 of the year the member would have reached the spouse’s required beginning date. A spouse can instead elect member treatment and use April 1 after the year the spouse reaches their own required beginning date. The system must accept that election, filed at least 30 days before required payments or by the federal deadline. If the spouse dies before payments start, these rules apply as though the spouse were the member. Payments to a child count as spouse payments for the start-date rule if they later become payable to the surviving spouse. That transfer must occur at age 18 or, if later, at the law’s designated event. That event is the later of when disability ends or full-time study ends, capped at age 23. These changes affect payment timing, not benefit amounts.

Employers cover Louisiana teacher pension law costs

Beginning July 1, 2026, contributing employers must cover any costs of this law through added teacher retirement contributions. Those contributions must follow Louisiana’s constitutional pension-funding rules. The law sets no dollar amount, and added contributions apply only if the law creates costs. Members and beneficiaries have no direct payment duty under this funding rule.
