Educators can hold public and federal roles

Teachers and education professionals at schools, other educational institutions, or parish or city school boards can also hold elected or appointed offices. Qualifying education roles include appointments or jobs affecting curriculum or educational programs, or requiring professional judgment to support the institution's educational mission. Louisiana education professionals can also hold federal jobs as engineers, researchers, or related workers in healthcare, science, or technology. This includes joint programs between the federal government and public colleges or universities.

Federal court reporters can serve Louisiana courts

Qualified court reporters employed by the federal government can also work as court reporters for Louisiana state or local courts. The law allows both roles at the same time. It does not guarantee a job or set the pay.

Court workers can take outside appointments

Louisiana judicial branch employees, including temporary judges serving ad hoc or pro tempore, can hold appointments in another government branch. The outside office must be part-time. They must serve as designated representatives or appointed members or officers of a board, committee, task force, or commission. Separately, judges ad hoc paid by the day are not public employees for purposes of R.S. 42:1132(B)(4)(c). That limited classification change does not change their pay.

Firefighters can hold additional public roles

Louisiana's dual-officeholding rules now allow members and officers of volunteer or combination fire departments to hold another public role. That role can be an elected office, appointed office, or job. The law does not guarantee a position or provide pay.

Unpaid advisers can hold additional public roles

People serving on unpaid advisory committees, projects, working groups, or commissions can also hold another public office or job. This covers members, appointees, designated representatives, and officers. The additional office can be elected or appointed. The exception applies only to unpaid advisory service.
