Career activity standards reach charter students

Each year, Louisiana Works must give public school leaders regional and statewide lists of high-demand job fields. Schools must match career activities to those fields as much as feasible. All school boards must certify yearly compliance to the education department and keep activity records that can be audited. Charter schools serving covered grades must follow the career-activity rules, including graduation-plan records, counselor documentation, and elementary counselor-teacher consultation requirements. An approved charter may specifically provide different rules.

More career exploration for middle schoolers

Louisiana public schools must hold at least six career activities per grade each school year in grades 6–8. At least three must include employer interaction, career learning tied to high school courses, workplace learning exposure, or career-interest surveys. Schools must record at least one activity in each student's Individual Graduation Plan, linking school learning with career goals. Students take career-interest surveys in grade 6 and update them in grades 7 and 8. Louisiana's education board must provide middle- and high-school advising guidance that equips counselors to support these records and survey updates.

Yearly career activities for elementary students

Louisiana public schools serving grades K–5 must provide at least one career-awareness activity each school year. It must include employer interaction, career learning tied to high school courses, exposure to workplace learning, or a career-interest survey. Elementary counselors must provide preventive and developmental counseling to all public school students in grades K–6. This counseling helps students prepare for middle and high school responsibilities. Counselors may work with teachers on career programs covering self-awareness, job awareness, basic work preparation, and yearly K–5 career activities.
