New brain-treatment coverage for children, with limits

Louisiana requires qualifying health plans to cover certain immune-related brain conditions in children. These include pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS), pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS), and other autoimmune encephalitis. Coverage includes intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, with the plan's usual deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Plans may limit IVIG to three monthly courses unless a clinical review finds more treatment medically necessary. Insurers may consider expert-group treatment recommendations but cannot require strict adherence; treatment decisions must rest on evidence of positive patient outcomes. The requirement applies to new policies issued on or after January 1, 2026. Existing policies must comply at renewal, no later than January 1, 2027. Office of Group Benefits programs, excepted-benefit plans, limited-benefit plans, and short-term policies lasting less than 12 months are excluded.
