Stricter screening for child welfare workers

Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services must check every current and prospective employee’s criminal history and abuse-registry records. Applicants cannot be hired until both checks are complete. The law requires firing employees listed on the state registry of proven abuse or neglect after January 1, 2010. This rule now applies beyond workers with specified child-related duties. Permanent classified employees cannot be fired until they have exhausted their administrative appeal rights.
