Paid coverage for Lafayette first responders’ survivors

The City of Lafayette must provide and pay for health insurance for its fallen firefighters’ and law enforcement officers’ families. Death must result from an official-duty injury or work protecting life or property in that role, on or off duty. Surviving spouses keep coverage until they become eligible for Medicare. Children, stepchildren, and adopted children qualify while under 26 or physically or mentally disabled, including disabled children over 26. Coverage must match the scope of active employees’ coverage when the City offers it. The benefit applies retroactively to qualifying deaths on or after January 1, 2017. Spouses can decline their coverage; a child’s surviving parent or legal guardian can decline the child’s coverage.
