Continued insurance help for DeSoto sheriff retirees

Retired DeSoto Parish sheriffs and deputy sheriffs hired on or after January 1, 2009 no longer face a retirement deadline of January 1, 2026. For these retirees, the sheriff pays 100% of covered premiums with at least 20 years of creditable service, or 50% with 15 to fewer than 20 years. Payments come from the sheriff’s general fund and cover group hospital, surgical, medical expense, and dental insurance. They also cover premiums for the first $10,000 of life insurance. For those hired before January 1, 2009, the existing schedule remains: 100% with 30 or more years of creditable service, 75% with 25 years, and 50% with 20 years.
