Beginning January 1, 2026, Louisiana insurers cannot raise premiums or add or increase surcharges solely for a policy period's first lapse in required vehicle liability coverage lasting 90 days or less. After at least five straight years of coverage following a lapse, the next lapse counts as a first lapse. Insurers cannot deny an application or require another insurer solely because of one or more lapses. Later lapses without first-lapse protection can still lead to higher premiums or surcharges. Insurers can also still remove discounts that drivers no longer qualify for.
