Golden Meadow gains golf cart route options

The law lets Golden Meadow approve golf carts and low-speed vehicles on road shoulders within town. Eligible roads must have speed limits of 30 mph or less; Louisiana Highway 3235 is excluded. The town council must approve access by ordinance and record it in its minutes. It can add conditions consistent with the law or cancel approval at any time. Golf carts must be electric, four-wheeled vehicles originally designed for off-road use, with maximum speeds no higher than 25 mph. Low-speed vehicles must have four wheels, electric or gasoline power, and top speeds above 20 but below 25 mph. Their required equipment includes lights, signals, reflectors, mirrors, a safety-standard windshield, a wiper, speedometer, odometer, parking brake, brakes on every wheel, seat belts at every seat, and a vehicle identification number.

Golden Meadow cart users face requirements

Drivers using authorized Golden Meadow routes must hold a license valid for Louisiana highways and carry required proof of insurance. Each golf cart or low-speed vehicle must be registered with the town and display a town-issued decal as directed. Registration lasts as long as the registering owner owns the vehicle. The town can set a registration fee by ordinance, but the law requires no fee and sets no amount. The municipal clerk must retain collected fees and deposit them into the town’s general fund.
