Veterans can serve as trained school guardians

Louisiana law creates a school guardian role for veterans who meet the state's veteran definition. Guardians must have an honorable discharge documented by a DD 214 and pass the legally required background check. They must be physically and mentally able to perform their duties. They must work as employees or contractors for a local public school system, nonpublic school, or law enforcement agency. Required school-incident training involves law enforcement and school officials. It includes annual instruction in firearms safety, self-defense, calming tense situations, mental health incidents, and disability awareness. Training also covers active school threats, basic trauma care, and first aid. Guardians must follow school policies on duties, authority, and use of force, and have only powers expressly granted by their employer and law. They can act to prevent active threats. They can temporarily detain someone with reasonable cause to believe that person committed or is about to commit a felony. State rules in Code of Criminal Procedure Article 214 apply to their actions. Guardians are not peace officers and cannot make arrests unless separately commissioned under law. Charter schools remain exempt from most public-school mandates, but these school guardian rules apply to them.
