More treatment options for sexual partners
Louisiana expands expedited partner therapy, which lets patients' sexual partners get antibiotics without their own exam or clinical assessment. Partners do not need an existing relationship with the prescriber. Eligible infections include gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and others approved by the Louisiana Department of Health. The department must create a list of eligible infections. Louisiana-licensed doctors, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants with state prescribing authority can provide the drugs or prescriptions. Patients must choose this option and receive written information to give their partners.
Legal protections for partner treatment providers
Doctors, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants gain legal protections when providing expedited partner therapy. Pharmacists receive the same protections when dispensing drugs for this treatment. They must act reasonably, in good faith, and follow the law. Protected actions cannot lead to civil or criminal liability or a finding of unprofessional conduct.
