The law sets label rules for foods containing dairy-identical or dairy-derived proteins made through microbial fermentation rather than mammalian lactation. Businesses cannot label or market them as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream, or another dairy food for people. Products offered for sale must state: “Produced through microbial fermentation. Not derived from mammalian lactation.” This statement must appear on the main display panel, near the product name, in at least 30-point type. Its typeface and color must contrast with the background. These rules take effect only when House Bill No. 512 of the 2026 Regular Session becomes law and takes effect.
The law covers foods containing dairy-identical or dairy-derived proteins made through microbial fermentation, not milk production by mammals. It bans making these products for sale, selling, holding, offering for sale, or distributing them in Louisiana. The ban takes effect only when House Bill No. 512 of the 2026 Regular Session becomes law and takes effect. Violations face enforcement, penalties, and remedies under existing law. This provision sets no penalty amount.
