Chiropractic students can treat patients with limits

Louisiana law allows eligible chiropractic students to perform adjustments or manipulations under a qualified chiropractor's supervision. Students must attend an accredited chiropractic college and qualify for admission to its outpatient clinic. Supervisors must have five years of active licensure in good standing in Louisiana or another jurisdiction. They must also be licensed by the Louisiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Supervisors must have no disciplinary issues in the preceding three years, no open complaints, and no ongoing investigations. Both must register with the board, tell patients their roles, and follow board-defined recommendations for student procedures. Supervisors must stay onsite but do not have to be in the room during the procedure. They cannot delegate authority to diagnose or prescribe treatment plans, and students cannot claim to be licensed chiropractors. Either person faces board discipline for violations.
