Louisiana’s Jody’s Law requires investigating agencies to adopt rules for quickly notifying other law enforcement agencies about hit-and-runs. Notices must report that a hit-and-run occurred. When known, they must include reported injuries, the vehicle’s make, model and license plate number, and its travel direction. Agencies must share this information through the Louisiana Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, which sends notices to all Louisiana law enforcement agencies. The Department of Public Safety and Corrections’ Office of State Police oversees the system.
Louisiana courts must use the factors in Code of Criminal Procedure Article 316 when setting bail in every hit-and-run case. They cannot use a fixed bail schedule. The law does not set a specific bail amount.
