Orleans Parish sheriff terms shift to January

Eligible Orleans Parish voters elect one sheriff at parish and municipal elections. The standard term is four years, starting on the first Monday in May until the January transition. The sheriff elected in 2029 serves until a successor takes office on January 9, 2034. Sheriffs elected after 2029 take office on the second Monday in January following their election. The law does not create household payments, costs, or benefit eligibility changes.
