Clearer school-zone device rules for drivers

Louisiana law defines school zones for its existing wireless-device driving restriction. Zones must border public or private kindergarten-through-12th-grade schools or postsecondary schools and have official school-warning or similar traffic signs. The defined area extends at least 250 feet before the zone begins. Zones are active for 60 minutes before and after school starts, and 60 minutes before and after school ends. Covered devices include cellphones, texting devices, personal digital assistants, stand-alone computers, and other removable wireless devices used to manually write, send, or read text or data. The definition excludes permanently installed vehicle equipment, hands-free devices, citizens band radios and hybrids, and commercial two-way radios. It also excludes amateur-radio transmitters and receivers used by federally licensed operators, and electronic communication devices with push-to-talk functions.
