Louisiana drivers face limits on plate coverings

Beginning January 1, 2027, Louisiana requires permanent license plates to be securely fastened, with the bottom at least 12 inches above ground. Plates must stay clearly visible, clean, and readable. Unless authorized by the commissioner, coverings, films, sprays, frames, brackets, coatings, substances, or electronic devices cannot obscure plate information from any angle. This includes making numbers, letters, decals, stickers, symbols, or the issuing jurisdiction harder to see, read, or reflect light. The rule includes the year registration sticker. Fines are up to $75 for a first offense and up to $250 for a second or later offense.
