Local fire limits, permits, and fines

Louisiana parishes and municipalities can set fire limits and ban storing, placing, piling up, abandoning, or using flammable, explosive, or combustible materials above ground within the right-of-way of public bridges, overpasses, viaducts, or tunnels. They can approve these materials for permitted events, but permits or agreements must follow state and federal laws and regulations. The law exempts infrastructure owned or operated by member-owned electric cooperatives or investor-owned utilities regulated by the Louisiana Public Service Commission or New Orleans’s governing authority. It also protects temporary, attended activities using approved equipment or materials when legally authorized and compliant with state, federal, parish, municipal, fire, health, traffic, public-safety, and right-of-way requirements. Anyone who knowingly and willfully violates the section or rules, regulations, or orders issued under it can face a civil fine of up to $1,000 per violation; the fine is not automatic.
