Fordoche replaces police chief elections with appointments

Fordoche’s mayor appoints the police chief instead of voters electing the chief townwide. A majority of the board of aldermen must approve. Appointment waits until the elected chief serving when the law takes effect finishes that term. This wait does not apply if the office is vacant or temporarily filled when the law takes effect. The appointed chief’s term matches the terms of the appointing mayor and board, and the chief reports directly to the mayor. The board sets the salary by ordinance on the mayor’s recommendation and sets duties, qualifications, and responsibilities by ordinance. These rules apply only to Fordoche and override conflicting laws.
