Stronger care protections for sexual assault survivors

Louisiana hospitals and healthcare providers must tell sexual assault survivors about available treatment. Qualified providers must examine and treat survivors without undue delay in a private space that protects their health and safety. Care, including exams to collect evidence, must fit each survivor’s needs and circumstances and requires the survivor’s consent. Survivors must receive an advocate when one is available, and their communications with the advocate are legally protected. With the survivor’s consent, the advocate can stay during the exam to collect evidence. Providers must offer emergency contraception and medicines to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections when medically needed. These medicines require the survivor’s consent and must be given according to the Drug Information Handbook.
