Higher survivor benefits for police and firefighters

The law raises Louisiana firefighter and law enforcement officer survivor payments from $250,000 to $300,000. Death must result from an injury during official duties or from protecting life or property, on or off duty. The surviving spouse receives the payment; without a surviving spouse, the surviving child or children receive it. If neither survives, the named beneficiary receives it, or the estate receives it when no designation form exists. Each law enforcement officer must complete a beneficiary designation form. The separate $50,000 payment for each dependent child stays unchanged and goes to the child's tutor or legal representative. The state risk manager pays these benefits from the Self-Insurance Fund. The law takes effect July 1, 2026, and covers qualifying deaths on or after July 1, 2025. The Law Enforcement Officers and Firemen's Survivor Benefit Review Board must approve the claim. Claims approved before or after the effective date qualify for the increase.
